[Australia] Darwin - Mataranka & Bitter Springs - Best nature pool in Darwin

Situated near Mataranka, it is famous for its crystal-clear thermal waters that maintain a consistent temperature of around 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round.

There are so many nice pools, springs, and national parks in the Northern Territory (NT). Personally, I think the best one is definitely Bitter Springs! Bitter Springs itself is a natural spring with a current that will carry you from upstream to downstream. The best way to enjoy Bitter Springs is to bring your noodle and snorkeling gear and simply drift with the water. It's a well-organized national park with designated areas for swimming and snorkeling enjoyment.

How to get there from Darwin

Google Maps is very convenient, but the park itself is also easily accessible. Simply follow Stuart Highway from Darwin!

On Stuart Highway, the speed limit is generally around 130 km/hr. It's approximately a 4-hour drive since it's 422 km away from Darwin.

Take a left turn once you enter Mataranka town and see the big sign for Bitter Springs. After 3 km, you'll reach the end of the road. It's just a 2-minute walk from the car park to reach this beautiful natural spring.

Where to stay

Camping/Lodge
If you're planning a weekend trip from Darwin, you can stay at camping grounds nearby such as Katherine, Edith Falls, or Mataranka.

Mataranka thermal pool

NoraThis is definitely the famous hot spring in Mataranka, but it's been well-organized, so it's more like a man-made outdoor pool. It's still beautiful, and, of course, a lot busier than Bitter Springs, with a pub and accommodation available in the park.
