A bit about Doha and Qatar
Doha is the capital of Qatar which as a country is a peninsula in the Persian Gulf bordering Saudi Arabia. Doha is currently growing rapidly with lots of recent investment in developing its' infrastructure such as building a new city metro and upgrading it's road networks. On top of this there is the upcoming 2020 world cup and other investments in new education sector buildings and other facilities.
Qatar in the same way as some other nearby arab countries brings in most of it's wealth through its' abundant supply of oil and gas natural resources. This has resulted in a hugely diverse population with most people coming to the country as expatriates- percentage of Qatari nationals compared to the total population of Qatar is only around 15%. (http://www.bq-magazine.com/economy/2013/12/population-qatar) Because of this range of demographic, Qatar has a very international feel and has a lot of hotels and facilities catering to it's expatriate workforce.
Top 5 things to do
1. Dune bashing
There are lots of tours available which will take you just south of Doha to the desert. These can include also a trip to the beach. The driver will take you careering over and down the sides of the dunes at high speed. It is not recommended to eat shortly before this experience!
2. Visit to the Museum of Islamic Art
This museum exhibits art from around the arab regions on it's several floors. While the art is worth a look, the building itself steals the show and is as stunning from the outside as from the inside. It also boasts a great position along the Corniche from where to take a stroll in the nearby coastline park or just visit the museum cafe to take it all in with a seat by the huge windows.
3. Spend a day relaxing in one of the numerous hotel resorts
There are lots of high end hotel resorts which have great facilities and restaurants to spend a day unwinding.
4. Visit to Katara
This cultural village has some nice restaurants and other traditional buildings which you can wander around.
5. Get lost in the Souq
The souq waqif is a sprawling market which has many different sections from the Gold Souq to the Falconry area. It is worth exploring each area and perhaps picking up a few souvenirs along the way. There are also interesting restaurants and cafes here for relaxing after a long day in the sun.
